This is a painting of one of my favourite parts of Manchester. It’s the junction of Deansgate and Whitworth Street, and all forms of transport pass under and over the many bridges. Trams, trains, canal boat, pedestrians and cars all contribute to a busy, dynamic scene which looks great as nightfall descends.

It’s also the last few weeks of the exhibition at Gallery Oldham, which finishes on October 6th. It’s a very comprehensive exhibition spanning work made over a twenty year period and includes a lot of work on loan from private collectors. It’s not going to happen again in a hurry!

The Castlefield was a very important part of my life as a young graduate, and through involvment with the exhibitions committee got to meet some of the country’s leading artists. I fulfilled many different roles at Castlefield over a period of over twenty years, including invigilator, chairman of the board of trustees, and even book keeper at one point!

A 30metre crane

Gallery Oldham recently hired a crane to revisit the site of the famous 1876 panoramic photograph taken by Squire Knott from the roof of a now demolished mill. I’ve been working on some panoramic paintings of Oldham for the exhibition starting next month, so was invited along for the ride. The original photograph shows a virtual forest of mill chimneys. I counted about 70. How many are now left? Not a single one. 3 churches are the only buildings that help to identify the view. I’ve been working on a large painting of the view, a 2 piece 14 ft panorama. A 3000 metre mountain

I recently visited the Alps at the invitation of art loving skiing enthusiast Robin Saxby. I did a number of oil sketches on location and with the aid of some photographs hope to make some large paintings of the mountains.

A 300km bike ride and a 462 metre Highland Pass

I’m about to embark on a 3 day – 300km bike ride. On and off road the ride takes in the highest point on the national cycle network, Drumochter Pass at 462 metres. Along with some friends, I’m raising money for the Rossendale Rays – a special needs swimming club here in my home town. I’m working towards a new exhibition at Clark Art in Hale – a joint show with Adolphe Valette (1876-1942 ), arguably the grandfather of the Northern Art school, and the man who imported Impressionism to Manchester through his role as tutor at the Manchester School of Art where he taught L.S.Lowry. The exhibition will complement a survey of Valette’s work at the Lowry in Salford: “Adolphe Valette: A Pioneer of Impressionism in Manchester 15th October-29th January 2011″.

Provisional date for the exhibition at Clark Art is 20th October 2011. I’ll post more details as soon as I have them.

As one exhibition closes, another begins….

The exhibition at Touchstones, Rochdale has now finished. If you missed it, don’t worry because the exhibition now moves to Salford Art Gallery, opening on Saturday 26th March 2-4pm. (All welcome) Refreshments and live acoustic music.

The majority of the paintings from Rochdale will be on show, together with a new group of paintings of the Salford area, all of which are for sale. We’ll also be showing a dvd of the BBC North West 30 min documentary about my work, “A Picture of Manchester” which was broadcast a couple of years ago.
